Lubbock is an American city in the state of Texas. It is an agriculturally rich city and is the largest cotton growing region of the world. Lubbock’s agriculture is dependent on irrigated water from the Ogallala Aquifer. This causes a short fall of water in the city sometimes. From years different methods and technologies have been invented to support the agriculture and farming in this city. A company in Lubbock Smartfield has recently received a million dollar investment through Texas Emerging Technology Fund for commercializing of a latest device which supports the farming system.
This device by Smartfield is called the SmartCrop. The company had installed 100 SmartCrop devices for the farmers. According to Smartfield’s Chief Financial Officer Kyle Gayler “These will actually measure the temperature of the plant itself. It will communicate back to the base station that information”. This means that the devices are capable of keeping the update about the farm and the crops automatically and they send the information to the Smartfield station. Smartfield then communicates with the farmer and informs him about the situation of the farm and the crops.
The SmartCrop technology uses an infrared thermometer to detect the crops and the plants. SmartCrop trains and gives updates and guidance to the farmers about when to water the crops and how to make the produce better. Apart from helping the framer it helps to reduce the wastage of water. This latest technology has brought new jobs to the Lubbock city as more and more farmers are now making their move towards this technology.
Gayler believes that this technology will soon be introduced to other parts of the country. He further said that the company will continue bringing improvement in the technology and will introduce it in international market too as it has great potential to change the farming scenario all around the world.
